July 2019 - The Great Escape
Luke Fussell - Guest Editor
If you escape this means you are free and when you are free this can mean so many things.
A Great Escape story is an exercise in tension and release — it can explore the emotions and motivations of a character in the throes of a daring feat or capture a small moment that will later mean so much. Maybe someone is conquering a fear or maybe they are tunnelling their way towards freedom. Either way these stories will thrill you and reveal something about our talented writers.
SLAM! The cage door was shut and locked with the most secure and complicated locks. KA-CHINK! The first lock was secured. The jingling of keys rang in Señor Jalapeño’s ears as the guard went to the second lock. A security camera faced outwards, towards the opposite cell so if he got outside he would be watched. The last lock was one that could never be picked. It had 8,919,718 possibilities and used the latest in locking technology. There was no way for him to get out. Or was there?
It was dawn and Señor Jalapeño was wide awake. He couldn’t sleep because he couldn’t believe that he had been sent to solitary confinement for the rest of his life! All because a person who had dressed up as him burned had 90 people! Anger swelled up in his eyes and he thought, NO ONE messes with Señor Jalapeño!
He heard someone crying through the air vent that connected the cells.
“WILL YOU SHUT UP!” yelled Señor Jalapeño in frustration. The crying got louder and he banged on the wall, and the whole prison cell collapsed! The air vent actually led to a tunnel that went underground!
Silently, Señor Jalapeño slid into the tunnel and wriggled his way in. He could see a light ahead. “I’m freeeee!” he shouted with joy.
Señor Jalapeño grinned malevolently, “Now I will make whoever did this to me pay!”

The Weird Slide
Finally, I was at the top of the stairs! I couldn’t wait to go in the slide. I gripped the sides and lowered my legs into the hole then pushed off!
First, the slide felt like a regular slide. It was light green and it was just like other slides that I had been on five days before!
“Why did Mum and Dad tell me it was better than any other slide I have been on?” I wondered.
Suddenly it became very rough and bumpy. My stomach was aching so much that I felt like getting off the slide. It became a bit smoother, then smoother again until slime came pouring down from the top of the slide.
“Is someone pranking me?” I screamed.
The slide went up, which was very weird because normally you go down, but this slide was going up! I was very muddled up. It began to slow down so I knew I was at the top of the incline.
“OH NO!” I yelled, “IT WILL BE VERY STEEP!... AAAAARRGHHH!”
It went down VERY FAST! My tummy tickled and it was pitch black. My heart beat rapidly and my legs went pale! I was very scared.
The slide finally slowed down.
“How long is this ride going to take?!” I asked. I saw some light.
“Oh! I must nearly be at the bottom!” I came out and landed in a pool. I felt much smarter and braver because I went down the biggest slide in town!
David stretched and yawned in bed. It was a good day. The sun was out. David went and woke up his wife, Lizzy. She yawned and got out of bed. “Did you have a good night sleep?” David asked.
“Yes.” said Lizzy.
David and Lizzy brushed their teeth and went for breakfast. When they finished breakfast and went outside, they saw something strange in the sky. David stared at the sky and said, “Ooooh!”
There was a big shape of a dragon in the air. David took a picture of it and Lizzy smiled as she watched the soft white clouds raced along through the blue sky.
David suggested their next activity, “Let’s go four wheel driving.” Lizzy opened the gate while David went to get the four wheel drive and drive them out to the front of their house. They drove up and down the hills around their neighbourhood lots of times, it was fun.
“Let’s have lunch,” said Lizzy.
“Yes, let’s,” said David.
“What are we having today?” Lizzy asked as David drove.
“Actually, we’re going to an Italian restaurant.”
When they arrived, they entered and ordered lasagna and spaghetti bolognese. When David ate the first bite, he burnt his tongue. But still, it was delicious and they had a great lunch.
When they went home, it was already three o’clock. So they watched television until six o’clock. Then they prepared dinner, David had bought pizzas already so they ate. Then they went to sleep.
There was a strange sound coming from the next room while David and Lizzy were sleeping. It was a robber, he broke into the house with a crowbar and had stolen both Lizzy and David’s wallets. He also left the oven burning then he escaped.
When David woke up, he felt the heat coming from the oven.
“FIRE!” he screamed, waking up Lizzy. Both Lizzy and David screamed, they were terrified. The fire was blazing. David called the fire brigade. The fire was getting closer and closer, it was now half a metre away from them.
Lizzy and David heard the sound of a helicopter propellor. There was a rescue helicopter above them and it let down a rope to rescue them. It was just in time too, because the fire burned up the house before their eyes. They were safe and then the rescue person said to them, “I’m flying away now.”
Finally, the fire engine made it up to the hill to Lizzy and David’s house and extinguished the fire. The firefighters wrapped David and Lizzy in blankets and asked them, “What are you going to do?”
David and Lizzy replied, “We’re going to camp in the woods with our four wheel drive.”
Imagine that a lion has escaped from a zoo in the middle of huge city. The lion has left a trail of clues and a trail of destruction. Starting from the lion’s enclosure you must track the lion down as he makes his way back to the jungle.
